Every day, we spend more of our time online and get more of our stuff from the internet. Many times, the stuff we get is in the form of downloaded files, and these can be quite large: movies, music albums, e-books, high quality photos… All of these types of files can take a long time to download and upload, and take up a lot of space on our PC’s hard drive. For that reason, many systems have been developed to make these large files easier to work with, and one of them is the free program 7-Zip.

7-Zip is a tool for compressing (and later, extracting or decompressing) any sort of file into a compressed file, which is simply a file that contains all the same information, but has been converted into something more lightweight and easy to handle. A compressed file can also be a package containing several files, such as all the tracks on an album. What makes 7-Zip special compared to similar programs is the ability to compress into 7z files, a new format whose compression capabilities is far superior to any other.

Of course, 7-Zip can also work with the more common compressed file extensions, like Rar, Zip, Gzip, etc.
